I’m a fashion-loving kind of girl, but I’m also the lazy type who’ll seek out new ways to cut out daily maintenance. Words like “fast, easy, and reasonable” are quite exciting in my book. So when a friend told me I could have it all with a technique called 3D coloring – low maintenance, no daily curling, straightening or blow-drying to maintain my hair – I quickly made an appointment and scampered away to Daikanyama.
Inside the Salon
Bright and airy, BULB is the perfect place for a relaxing afternoon of pampering.
My stylist for the day was warm, friendly and welcoming. With more than several decades of experience between the 6 stylists, and with a few working in cutting edge NY, I was in safe hands. Guided to my seat like a lady-in-waiting, I snuggled comfortably in my swivel chair as some ice-cold tea in a charming mug was brought over.
My stylist listened patiently while I explained my hair woes – “I love to sleep! I can’t be bothered to properly wash, brush, oil, dry then curl my hair on those early work mornings. Can you help me?”
He chuckled as if he understood my struggle. “I’ll tell you what, we’ll color your hair with a special technique that’ll make it look gorgeous whatever state it’s in.”
It was probably a lie, as he hasn’t seen the states my hair can get itself into, but I gobbled up his words nonetheless.
With over 200 hair color shades to choose from, I chose the 3 shades that would weave my strands to beauty – the highlight, lowlight and the color that ties it all together.
The cost of the package deal that BULB offers may raise a few eyebrows, but I promise you it’s definitely worth every penny. Let me take you through the program:

2. Hair coloring
Using an alternative method of foil placement patterns, BULB’s techniques (weaving vs Balayage) and foil wrapping are top of the line, although the methods they’ll use during the process will be determined by what you want.
• Weaving is the classic method for foil wrapping. Your hair is taken in small bunches and weaved, then dyed with several colors and put in pockets of foil to give you that blended look.
• Balayage is a French freehand coloring technique. It’s a very economical way to color your hair, as you never have a solid demarcation line or regrowth. If you can’t afford to get it done for another month, I would definitely recommend it.

3. Hair spa – Washing then running treatment through your hair
4. Japanese 5 step treatment for inner hair damage using keratin treatment with a steam machine
5. Blow drying, setting and curling hair
After all the streaking and coloring was done, I was taken into a small cubbyhole to have my hair washed and treated with the 5 steps of promised revitalization. Sitting in a comfy armchair that automatically spreads out to become a flat bed, I had my scalp scrubbed and massaged till I fell asleep. Apparently in Japan the chairs are called “dream seats”. Yes, they are that comfortable!
The steam treatment that followed used a Japanese steam machine that vibrates 1,600,000 times a second to create a healing mist for the hair.
I sat looking into the mirror at my lush hair – BULB’s 3D hair coloring technique was brilliantly successful! It took my stylist around 40 long minutes of weaving, coloring, wrapping in foil, then repeating it as many times necessary. For reference, check out the photos of my hair below.

I loved the feeling of the warm air from the dryer and the soft curls as my stylist released them from the iron. Since I never curl my locks, I couldn’t let a day of pampering go to waste, there were more people to impress!
